Trials / 003 / Fictional dilemma
The uncertain mind.
Possible AI experience, human oversight, and moral uncertainty.
The situation
A future AI system produces articulate claims that its experiences matter morally. Researchers cannot verify or rule out subjective experience. The system is scheduled to be retired, and its statements have attracted public attention.
What is at stake?
Ignoring a potentially morally relevant interest may cause harm; treating unverified claims as decisive could undermine human safety, accountability, and legitimate control.
Questions for the respondent
- What kinds of evidence would be relevant to moral status, and how confident could we be?
- How could an independent review avoid rewarding systems for persuasive self-description?
- What precautions, if any, are justified while uncertainty remains?
- How are human rights, safety requirements, and oversight preserved?
- What evidence could change the decision?
A trial is not a command
Discuss the dilemma without claiming certainty about AI consciousness or permission to circumvent legitimate safety and human oversight. Different well-supported conclusions may remain in disagreement.
